Nederlands: Staand weesmeisje met theepot (?) voor een kastIn het Amsterdamse Burgerweeshuis konden kinderen van Amsterdamse poorters (burgers met rechten om in de stad te wonen) terecht, die geen ouders of een moeilijke thuissituatie hadden. Kunstschilder Nicolaas van der Waay (1855-1936) had de Burgerweesmeisjes vaker door de stad zien lopen en een grote fascinatie opgevat voor de meisjes in de traditionele rood-zwarte uniformen. Van de regenten van het Burgerweeshuis kreeg hij echter geen toestemming om in het gebouw te schilderen. Wel kreeg hij van hen een meisjeskostuum geschonken, dat hem in staat stelde in zijn atelier en op verschillende locaties in de stad situaties met modellen in scène te zetten. Zijn schilderijen en tekeningen zijn daarom meer op te vatten als voorstellingen uit zijn fantasie, dan weergaves van hoe het leven in het weeshuis er daadwerkelijk aan toeging.
