The train from Allentown on the East Penn. road wasdue about half-past ten oclock, and arrived at the depotsimultaneously with the crowd, which rushed upon theengine and threatened to kill the engineer. Two of thedepot officers mounted the tank, and, drawing their revol-vers, threatened the crowd, but the engine in the meantimewas uncoupled and run back npon a side-track, leaving thetrain at the depot. The mob, which was heptded by two men named Grethand Weber, immediately began tearing up tracks and wedging switches. Two cabooses were set on tire, whenthe crowd moved on, going west on the Lebanon Valleyroad. The part of the mob in advance next set lire to afi-eight train, using the oil and waste taken from thewheel-boxes, tiring it and placing it upon the tracks beneaththe cars. Tliej^ then gathered a large quantity of waste,stole a huge can of coal-oil, and then started rapidly towardsthe Lebanon Yalley bridge.

THE READING RIOT. 317 This bridge is what is termed a truss bridge, thetracks being at tlie top, and the sides, which are abouttwenty feet high, covered with sheet iron. The advanceparty, numbering about thirty, and led by men namedSmith and Humphries, on reaching the bridge, crossedover to the western end. Here they were met by tliewatchman, whom they ordered to leave. They then raiseda trap-door leading down into the body of the stru(;turewhere a narrow gangway extends. Some seven or eightdescended through the trap, carrying the oil and waste,and also laro^e armf uls of broken wood. With this materialthey built a large fire within the body of the bridge, afterwliich they came up the trap singly. Three of the incendia-ries then went to the watch-box at the end of the bridge,demolished the doors and windows, and then set it on fire.They then passed out of siglit, up the Lebanon Yalleytracks until they reached the switches, then turned north,recrossed the Schuylkill at Tuckertown, and
