ENGLISH CHURCH ARCHITECTURE though the word makes no pretence of beingthe classical Latin for a whale. In Ps. civ. 26 the leviathan there mentionedis, of course, the whale, but elsewhere in theBible where the word leviathan is used itmeans a crocodile. We might fitly deal here with the symbol-ism of other inhabitants of the deep—withthe symbolism of the fish. The fish is oftenrepresented on the epitaphs and the smallerornamental objects of the Roman catacombs,from the very earliest centuries. Here it is symbolic of Christ, or of theChristian Faith, because of an acrostic whichEusebius, Augustine and others refer to, onthe Greek word, fyM*. They took the letters of this word, and madeeach letter the initial letter of a separate wordin the phrase : Vr)<rovs X/h<tto?, Oeov T/o? ^corrfp( Jesus Christ, the Son of God, ourSaviour).
