ENGLISH CHURCH ARCHITECTURE its shadow. If a dove ventures beyond thetree the dragon devours it. One or two dovesare shown falling off in the fourteenth centuryEnglish Bestiary (Slo. 3544) in the BritishMuseum. The symbolism of this story is asfollows. The tree is God ; the shadow is theSon ; the Dove is the Holy Spirit, and alsoit seems the Christian ; and the fruit of thetree represents wisdom. Something like this fable may be carved onthe Norman tympanum of Dinton, Bucks,where a tree is in the centre, and dragons aredevouring the fruit on either side. Accordingto the story, we must confess, they ought notto be so close. The animals cannot be lions,as they have only two legs. One eminentauthority has described them as lions. Under-neath the tympanum is the followinginscription in bold Roman capitals— PREMIA PRO MERITIS SI QUIS DESPERET HABENDAAUDIAT HIC PRECEPTA SIBI QUE SUNT RETINENDA.
