CHAPTER X THE DRAGON OR SERPENT We are all of us familiar with the representa-tions of the temptation of our first parents,Adam and Eve. It is probable that thesehave a Babylonian origin. In an ancientBabylonian seal a man and a woman aredepicted seated on either side of a tree, andreaching out their hands to pluck the fruit.A serpent rears its head behind the woman,and seems to be whispering in her ear. Pro-minent critics have identified this scene withthe Temptation, of which we read in Gen. iii,though it is only fair to add that some scholarswill not admit the identification. From theearly paintings of the catacombs right downto rough sculptures of the Temptation, suchas that on the early nineteenth centurytombstone at Llangwm, near Raglan, therepresentations vary only in the minutestdetails. In this respect the treatment of the Tempta-tion presents a marked difference from thaiof the Crucifixion, which for doctrinal andother reasons met with many changes. 157 SYMBOLISM OF ANIMALS
