After some years theybegan moving to the East, reaching Detroit by1712, and shortly afterward located at pointsalong the Maumee and Wabash rivers. TheDelawares, who afterward lived in the centralpart of the State, on White River, came thereabout 1750. It is probable that the French firstplaced representatives at the Indian villages nearthe site of Ft. Wayne, and next, about 1720,at Ouiatenon — on the north side of the Wabashjust below Lafayette — and that there werestockade forts at these places, but there is noth-ing to indicate a permanent settlement at eitherplace. The post at Vincennes was established in1731, largely under the influence of Father DeBeaubois, a Jesuit who had been stationed atKaskaskia. Families located there soon after-ward, and it remained a permanent settlement,though there is but one land grant recorded of 1MM W \.

INDIANA date prior to 1736. The- French posts weresmall and unimportant, and the history of the Under French and British rule presents novery striking features. In 1778 Vincennes wassurrendered to representatives of Gen. GeorgeRogers Chirk, and the Wabash country wasbrought under American control. A recaptureby the British was followed by a second takingby Clark in 1779. The region was ceded to theUnited States by the treaty of 1783, and was in-cluded in the Territory northwest of the OhioRiver, by the ordinance of 1787. It was thusgoverned until 1800, when Indiana Territory wasformed, including all of the Northwest Territoryexcept Ohio. From Indiana Territory, MichiganTerritory was cut off in 1805, and Illinois Terri-tory in 1809, leaving it with practically the pres-ent State boundaries. By act of Congress of19 April 1816, Indiana was authorized to form aState government, and the State was formallyadmitted by act of 11 Dec. 1816. In the mean-time a State Constitution had been adopte
