A conjecture it stillremains, for no fresh light has been thrown on the enigmaticfigure of John the Elder. But this circumstance has not pre-vented scholars from confidently attributing to him one or moreof the. Johannine group of writings. Even in Jeromes time itwas usual to identify the Elder of 2 and 3 John with the secondJohn of Papias. Hieron. de virr. ill. 9 Iohannis presbyteri adseruntur, cuiushodie alteram sepulcrum apud Ephesum ostenditur. Inc. 18 hespeaks of the opinionem qua a plerisque rettulimus traditum duasposteriores epistulas Iohannis non apostoli esse sed presbyteri. Onthe other hand he holds that both the Gospel and the Apocalypsewere written by the Apostle (c. 9). 1 ap. Eus. //. E. vii. 25. 2 11. E. iii. 39.

AUTHORSHIP clxxiii The Apocalypse is now ascribed to the Elder by perhaps a majority of critics. But recent criticism goes further, and transfers to the Elder nearly all that has been hitherto given to the Apostle. There were two Johns in the Apostolic age, but only one of them was a resident in Asia, and he was the Elder and not the son of Zebedee. It was the Elder and not the Apostle who was the disciple that Jesus loved, who gave his name to the Johannine books of the New Testament, and claims to be the writer of the Apocalypse. At this point it will be convenient to collect the traditions whichrelate to the residence of John in Asia and his exile to Patmos.(i) Residence in Asia. Iren. ii. 22. 5 (ap. Eus.
