To that monarch he probably showed thepredictions of Isaiah, and now that at the end of seventyyears of captivity Cyrus found the sovereign power in hishands, he issued a decree, in which, after acknowledging thesupremacy of Jehovah, he gave permission to the Jews in anypart of his dominions to return to their own land, and to rebuildthe city and temple of Jerusalem. The results of this decree,and the subsequent history of the Jews till the close of theOld Testament canon, are found in the remaining books ofthe Bible. Attention to the chronological order of the bookais important. The arrangement will be found in Pt.II.§ 6.
