ELECTRICITY TRANSFORMING BRAZIL 171 dne to the heavy summer rains in the mountains. Thecountry roads were buried at frequent intervals beneaththe red Brazilian clay which the landslides from thesteep hills had brought down, carrying trees, rocks andshrubs with them. In some cases one noted that theseslides had been accelerated during the heavy rains bycrevices caused by ant runs which perforate the soil andrequire constant watchfulness in these regions. Work-men were busy all along the way clearing the roads, build-ing new bridges, and resetting the telephone poles inorder that constant and ready communication may bekept between every part of these widely extended sta-tions. Those who have not visited these mountain regionscan hardly appreciate how quickly the rivers are over-flowed by the sudden deluge that flows down from theloftier ranges. During our visit an hours rain in oneof these parts registered a fall of two and one half inches,and during the rainy season the entire force of
