chancel arch hangs a painting of the RoyalArms, painted in the time of George the Third, fadedand tawdry, with dandified unicorn and a gambogelion, all teeth and mane, regarding the congregationon Sundays, and empty benches at other times, withthe most amiable of grins. It is quite typical ofPyecombe that those old Royal Arms should stillremain ; for the place is what it was then, and then itdoubtless was what it had been in the days of goodQueen Anne, or even of Elizabeth, to go no furtherback. The grey tower tops the hill as it has donesince the Middle Ages, the few cottages cluster about itas of yore, and only those who lived in those humblehomes, or reared that church, are gone.
