The assistant priests within the last year have beenRev. Father Paschalis Straub, 0. Min. Cap.; Rev. FatherBruno Schmitz, 0. Min. Cap.; and Father Bernardino. The zealous Fathers have established the Third Or-der of St. Francis in then* parish, a real religious order,with a rule adapted by the serapliic founder himself forpersons living in the world, and em-iched by the Sov-ereign Pontiffs with many special favors. The ThirdOrder of St. Francis boasts of many saints in all ranksand classes, from kings and queens on theii thrones tothe humblest degree in life. There are also in theChm-ch of Our Lady, Rosary and Altar Societies, andseveral approved sodalities. Some of the priests attached toit had to attend all the Catholics scattered in the upperpart of the island, and along the North River andLong Island Sound. Mass was said occasionall) in housesor barns, where a number could be gathered together;and when a summons came for a priest to attend the sickor d)ing, one would set out, not aided by raihoads asnow, but by such conveyance as he could procm-e, andmake his way thi-ough snow or storm to the dyingCatholic. The Cathedral was, in fact, the resource of alarge inu-al district, and many of the priests connectedwith it attended Catholics in the upper part of theisland.
