Theearliest of these, Die Beatushohle, written at theage of nineteen, while the author was still a medicalstudent, met with such extraordinary success amongall classes of readers that Bauberger published allhis subsequent tales as by the author of DieBeatushohle He drew his most successfulthemes from history and legend. His recognizedmodel for the spirit and tone of his stories wasChristoph Schmid. Bauberger also essayed lyrical and dramaticcompositions, but with indifferent success, for, alongwith much that is strong and beautiful, his versecontains more that is feeble and commonplace.His fame as a writer suffered no permanent eclipsefrom the inferiority of his poetry, for new tales,exhibiting all the charm of his early work, constantlyappeared to redeem his dramatic failures or half-successes.
