3,800 feet in height,lies between Kashmir and Astor, and on theChilas road the Babusar Pass is almost equallylofty and difficult. Moreover, neither of thesepasses is open until the middle of June, so notroops could be sent through to Gilgit until then.Fortunately the 32nd Pioneers, under Colonel Kelly,were there already. They had their headquartersat Bunji, and were engaged in making the road toChilas. Bunji is on the Indus, at the point wherethe roads from Astor and Chilas meet, and is onlythirty-eight miles from Gilgit. An order was therefore telegraphed to ColonelKelly on March 21st to march at once, and asrapidly as possible, to Chitral. He left Bunji thesame afternoon, and started from Gilgit with anadvance party on the morning of the 23rd, therear-guard having to wait for No. i KashmirMountain Battery, which arrived from Nomal thatafternoon, and following the day after.
