Probably this jungle toohas its distinctive fauna, but the birds met with were the sameas those found elsewhere. The loud song of the Lyre-Bird washeard amongst the tree-ferns ; Thickheads were melodious in thetrees ; Tree-creepers were running up the lofty gum-trees ; andthe call of the Oriole was heard overhead. The creek itself, thehaunt of blackfish, whose banks were green with masses ofmaiden-hair fern, was patrolled by the Sacred Kingfisher, whilstWhite-shafted Fantails snapped up the ail-too-numerousmosquitoes. For some few miles inland from the coast eastward of Mariothe country is more or less open, stretches of heathy countryprevailing, interspersed with open forest, in parts of whicheucalypts predominate, whilst in other parts, especially towardsthe edge of the sea-cliffs, Banksias are the prevailing trees.
