THE FOURTH 0. V. I. 145 As soon as the regiment reached the main road, itwas halted and Major Speaks reported to GeneralHaines, who had been waiting. The general directedthat one company act as advance guard and thatMajor Speaks assume personal charge of this duty.Company A was at once designated to take the ad-vance and it proceeded several hundred yards in ad-vance of the main column. A Company had not proceeded far until MajorSpeaks directed that with loaded pieces flankers anda point be thrown out. For the benefit of thosereaders who know nothing of military matters it isexplained that flankers are detachments of troopsdeployed to the right and to the left of advancingcolumns to discover anything that might impede theprogress of the advancing column, whether it be alarge stream, a fortification or an enemy.
