An Ephkata Sister. , . ^ recht^ as a theosophist, preacher, leader, organizer and composer all in one, stands without an equalamong the religious leaders in the early days of the Prov-ince. How this journeyman baker in a small town in Ger-many,—ignorant, uneducated, poor, unknown and some-what inclined to dissipation,—in his twenty-fifth year, while working at his trade, was suddenly chosen by theunseen powers to forsake the bake-trough and become aleader among men, is almost beyond comprehension. How-ever, within a few years we find this heretofore laborer inthe wilds of the New World, thousands of miles from his Contemporary sketch made in Kloster, 1748.

Remains of the Community. 31 birth-place, at the head of a mystic community, strangelycombining in its teachings the occult philosophy of theMystics and Cabalists of the Middle Ages with the severelysimple Sabbatarian worship and tenets as set forth in theirprimitive Bible teachings. Of this mystic Community thus formed in the wilder-ness there still remains several buildings, now rapidlygoing into decay through age and neglect, and they, too, will soon be a thing of the past. It is not alone, however.
