m the unholymarriage of witches and demons sprang the loath-some savages whom the Goths had afterwards somuch reason to dread. The real history of the Goths begins about theyear 245, when they were living near the mouths of theDanube under the rule of Ostrogotha (Austraguta),the first king of the Amaling stock. Ostrogotha wascelebrated in tradition for his patience ; but in whatway he displayed that virtue we are not informed, forhistory tells only of his victories. Whether on ac-count of his patience or his deeds in war, his famewas widely spread, for one of the oldest of Ango-Saxon poems mentions him as Eastgota, the fatherof Unwen. The name of this son is given by Jordanesas Hunuil, but probably the Anglo-Saxon form isthe right one. There is evidence that about twenty years beforethis time the Goths had become allies of the Romans,ivho paid them a yearly sum of money to defend theborder of the empire against the Sarmatian barbarianswho lay behind them. The Gothic king collected anarmy of thirty thousand men, partly belonging to hisown people and partly to other barbarian nations, andsent them over the river under the command of twogenerals, named Argait and Guntharic, who ravagedthe province called Lower Moesia, and laid siege toits capital, a city which the great emperor Trajan hadbuilt, and named Marcianopolis in honour of hissister Marcia. The inhabitants were glad to bargainwith the Goths to raise the siege on receiving a heavypayment in money, and then the barbarians wentback into their own
