No thoughtful student of history can review the unparalleled progress ofSan Francisco in the last forty years from an isolated, obscure hamlet, amid sandhills and brush to her exalted position among the leading cities of the earthycontrasting the difficulties encountered in the past and the incomparableadvantages of to-day, whose mind will not be filled with majestic awe as itsurveys the heights of possible attainments in the future. Nor can he avoidthe inevitable conclusion, that the creative energy of her people, which has.wrought such mighty transformations, is destined to accomplish yet granderresults in contributing to the worlds advancement and perpetuating its civi-lization.
