, Montenegrosshortage of artillery having been remedied. A vigorousbombardment was begun from land batteries and fromAllied ships—that is, French and English ships. TheAllied fleets at first contented themselves with scouring theAdriatic in search of vessels carrying contraband, but nowthey attacked the outer ring of forts at Cattaro. The fortsreplied vigorously, while new guns on Mount Lovtchen inMontenegro flung a hail of projectiles down on Austrianpositions. Not until the winter of 1915-16 was Montenegroagain active in the war. In the conflict of that winter shelost all—at least temporarily. That, however, is a storymore properly told in its relation to operations by all thePowers in the Balkans, as they set in during the autumn of1915. Several chapters in a later volume of this work aredevoted to the war in the Balkans.^ 8 Principal Sources : Nelsons History of the War by John Buchan, TheNew York Evening Sun, The Literary Digest, Associated Press dispatches. 95 ►iJ N CS T-l
