that could be arrivedat. The lad died on June 2nd andthe death certificate was peritonitis.A Spanish vaquero heard the black-bird end of the yarn, proceeded toimagine the wounds on the head, andthe business manager of the vaquerosemployer brought the embellishedstory to Ventura. It needed furtherembellishment and a willing news-paper reporter did the rest. Thus it is that many of our largebirds are condemned unjustly. I haveread newspaper accounts in which aneagle is reported to have carried off,or attempted to carry off, young chil-dren. I believe there is no case, how-ever, which is authentic, or has beenverified, even of an eagle seriouslyharming a human being. A large percentage of our populationhas little knowledge of bird life andits value, with the result that pre-judice against a large bird, especiallythe raptores, is easily aroused, and re-ports such as the one quoted abovemust be considered detrimental tobird conservation. 152 THE OOLOQI8T PINK CROWS EGG In the issue of Dec. 1, 1919 of TheOologist, I noticed an article on PinkCrows eggs, by my old friends, J. R.Mann, of Arlington Heights, Massa-chusetts. Back in the 90s there wasa set of these eggs taken each year forthree successive years, in the same lo-cality, and same grove, the first twosets were taken toy L. Halliday andFay Kenrick, of Bedford, Massachu-setts, the two referred to by Mr. Mann, the third set, was taken by Kenrickand my self and is now in my collec-tion, though the first two sets had fiveeggs each and mine has but four, Iconsider it the best set of the lot on ac-count of the markings. The groundcolor of all is white the entire surfacecovered with very minute dots of lightbrown giving them the pink appear-ance in addition to this the secondegg has a few spots of darker brown, the third many more spots, and thefourth with still more spots had alsoa few blotches of dark brown and lightlavender. I have taken more than ahundred crows nests
