to draw me away from hernest. Finally I gave it up and turned myattention to the nest, or rather theeggs, as the Nighthawk doesnt be-lieve in having straws, sticks, hairs,etc., about, but lays eggs on bareground. After making a negative of theeggs, in situ, I watched the motherbird a long time, but she would notcome very close to her nest, so lefther, intending to return often andkeep track of the young ones. It wasthe 8th of August before I got backagain and found two good sized youngbirds, partly feathered, and pieces ofegg shell lying about. They seemed to be suffering a greatdeal from the heat as the ground wasvery hot and the strong sunlight beat-ing down on them. Quite a few weedshad grown up around since my lastvisit, but they did not give muchshelter from the sun; not the numer-ous corn stalks, as the birds were inquite an opening where the corn hadfailed to grow. I changed them abouta little for their picture, and theirlittle hearts beat so, that I was afraid THE OOLOGIST 187
