The Catholic journals were pleased to report THE CANONISATION OF TWO NEW SAINTS. 52 I the figures representing the outlay: eight kilometres (in roundnumbers, five miles) of material were used to adorn the archwaysand the columns of St. Peters, eighteen thousand candles burnedduring the ceremony, and other figures were in similar proportions.But the mass of the people are not satisfied with delicate artisticworks which they do not understand. They are struck with pomp-ous display, and this the Church of Rome has always aimed at inthe construction of its great temples, such as St. Peters, furnish-ing them as it did St. Peters on the 27th of last May. All thatungraceful but extraordinarily abundant adornment was like the7nise en scene for a spectacular show. Of the thirty or forty thousandpersons (fifty thousand according to some) who were present atthat ceremony there were very few of the true believer
