In addition to the erection of Fort Hamilton it was feltthat some defense was necessary for the protection of theresidents of Upper SmitMeld Township. AccordinglyJohn Van Etten and James Hyndshaw, both residents ofthe vicinity, were commissioned as Captain and Lieutenantrespectively, and, on January 14, 1756, directed by Ben-jamin Franklin to take such steps as might be necessaryto carry out the object in view. The erection of Fort Hyndshaw was doubtless a partof this work.
