MOUNT-EDGCUMBE, CORNWALL, THE SEAT OF THE EARL OF MOUNT- EDGCUMBE. Mount-Edgcumbe, from whichthe family of its noble proprietor de-rives its title, is a bold promontory atthe south-eastern extremity of thecounty of Cornwall, extending a con-siderable distance into the sea, andforming one of the barriers to theHamoaze. It is nearly five mileslong and three broad, rising in thecentre, but gradually sloping to thesea on each side. The seat of the ancient family ofthe Edgcumbes is a low embattledstructure, in the castellated style,with octagonal towers at each angle ;the centre is raised and flanked withturrets, which impart a peculiar andpleasing appearance to the building:it was erected by Sir Richard Edg-cumbe about the year 1550.
