e of themclaiming to be the largest in the world, and three cottonpickeries. The water supply is obtained from artesianwells, twenty in number, ranging in depth from 200 to850 ft. The water is clear and exceptionally pure andhealthful. The pumping machinery is said to be the fin-est in the Southwest, and to have a capacity of 18,000,000gals, per day. The streets of the city are laid out in avery irregular manner, although they are generally verywide and straight. The principal streets are paved, thematerial used being principally vitrified brick. Woodenblock consisting of bois darc (Osage orange) are also ex-tensively used, and there are many graveled streets. Thesoil is generally sandy, making a good foundation for thestreet railway tracks. The track construction of the street railway lines inthe paved streets consists of forty-five pound T rail sup-ported on chairs.
