ndays the students are required to attend SundaySchool and Church. In the morning they are permitted toattend the church of their choice and as almost all the Prot-estant denominations have organized congregations in thetown, each pupil can find a congenial place of worship.Teachers accompany the girls to church. The Bible is taught as a text-book throughout the entirecourse. Vacations Vacations are had at Thanksgiving, during the ChristmasHolidays and at the Easter season. Public Entertaitment Entertainments are held during the school year. Themost popular are those known as The Monday EveningEntertainments. These have been held for the* last fouryears. They furnish a fine opportunity for the young ladiesto become familiar with appearing before an audience. Other entertainments have been plays by the CollegeDramatic Club, the Musical Association of the University ofNorth Carolina, Mme Marie von Unschuld Piano Recital, theanniversaries of the Minervian and Columbian LiterarySocieties.

HICKORY, NORTH CAROLINA 21 Literary Societies There are two Literary Societies, the Minervian and theColumbian. These meet every two weeks. The work of theliterary society in a college is very important in the studentseducation. Each girl is encouraged to join one of the two.Each society has open meetings from time to time, and ananniversary is held each year. Reports are made each quarter and mailed to parentsand guardians. These reports are carefully recorded so thatthe record of each student may be found at any time. 4That Government is best which teaches us to govern our- It is the purpose of the management to surround thestudents with all the advantages of a refined and Christianhome. Our rules are few and simple, and are intended forthe welfare of the pupils and the school. The governmentencourages students to govern themselves, and those whoseinfluence is bad and pernicious will not be allowed to remain.Each pupil is inspired to do right from a sense of honorrather than by cond
