Summary[edit]

Description
English: The beautiful old manor house of Castellmarch The present house dates back to 1629 when it was built for Sir William Jones, the Chief Justice of the King's Bench in Ireland and MP for Caernarfonshire, towards the end of his life. The site, however, was an ancient one and is mentioned in the Trystan ac Esyllt (Tristan and Iseult) tales of the Mabinogi. During the Civil War his son Griffith Jones supported the Parliamentary side and Castellmarch was an early preaching station for the Puritans. In March 1649 Griffith Jones was kidnapped by Royalist privateers operating out of Wexford, Ireland, and held as a hostage for the life of the leading Caernarfonshire Royalist, Col. Sir John Owen of Clenennau. At the end of the war he changed sides and led a witch hunt against his erstwhile parliamentarian allies. http://yba.llgc.org.uk/en/s1-JONE-WIL-1566.html
