In the roving life of the native police, theobject of which in those days was to patrolthe outside stations and sample new country farbeyond them, I found that practically duringall seasons, wet or dry, wild fovvl of every sortprevailed, ranging from black swans, mag-pie, and other sorts of geese, down to thetiniest species of teal, and occasionally snipe.But of all these birds I preferred the genuineblack duck, which is found in all five of theAustralian Colonies, as grand a bird as ourhome mallard, many of them attaining aweight of from three up to four pounds ; theypossess a delicious subtle flavour, whenproperly cooked, which others besides myselfhave not found in any other species.
