It wascommanded by Major CharlesZagonyi, a Hungarian, whose mili-tary record had been made inEurope. This dashing and fierysoldier, with a band of 160 men,charged upon a Confederate forceof 2,000, who were drawn up in ahollow square. He rode acrossthe field, unheeding the firing ofthe skirmishers, but charged intothe midst of the Confederates,and with pistols and sabers, scat-tered them like dry leaves in theautumn wind. Not content withthis, the daring Major chased theminto the streets of Springfield, and fought them hand to hand.After this daring and unequaled achievement, he hoisted theNational flag upon the courthouse at Springfield, sent a guard tocare for the wounded, and then went quietly back to Bolivar.
