On my placethe birds have such awealth of natural foodthat it is only duringthe winter storms andwhen the ground iscovered with snowthat they visit thefood-houses; but on many other places—as, for instance, in Meriden, N. H.,where Mr. Baynes and the Meriden BirdClub are doing such good work—therehave been food-houses erected on placesalong the main street, entirely apart fromany protecting shrubbery or natural foodsupply, and many of these food-housesseem to be well patronized both winterand summer. Water, particularly during the sum-mer months or times of drought, is, ofcourse, necessary for the birds. If theycant get it on your place, they will beforced to look elsewhere. The properinstallment of a drinking fountain orbird bath is a simple affair, and one thatis almost sure to prove a great attractionto the birds, as well as a never-failingsource of entertainment to the owner. Drinking fountains may be purchasedready made or manufactured at home. 170
