s^but as the surface is soft and smooth we doffed our boots and encasedour feet in moccasins, or shoes of untanned skin. The water at thebottom of the terraces is tepid; but each successive stage finds it hot-ter, and at last it is too much so for comfort. On one terrace after theother you find delightful tubs suitable for bathing; we should havebathed in them, but had been told to wait for the Pink Terraces, on theother side of the lake, where the baths are finer. There is just enoughsoftness to the surface formed by the silica to make it pleasant to thetouch and entirely safe to walk on without danger of slipping. IS^ot only are the terraces beautiful, but the ornamentation whichhas been made by the hand of )Srature, busily working here throughmany centuries, is beautiful in the extreme. The hanging ornamentsand cornices at the Quter edges of the terraces and on the rims of thebaths surpass the work of the most gifted designer or the most vivid A WOXDEE OF THE HOT LAKE DISTRICT. 229

The boiling lake at the top of the White Terraces is a pool perhapsa hundred feet in diameter, and varj^ing in height from time to time.Curiously enough, it changes with the wind, though wlw the Avindshould affect it I anl unable to guess. It is boiling, boiling, boiling ailthe while, though more furiously at some times than at others. Thewater is a beautiful turquoise blue, and so intense is the blue that itreflects upon the cloud of steam that rises from the lake. In fact, nearlyall the hot springs in this region are blue, and the color is perceptibleat very slight depths. We wanted to spend a whole day here; but time pressed, and wedescended to the lake again and crossed to the Pink Terraces. Thelake is a tiny one, only a mile in length by half a mile in width.
