ounds. The Neuadd Fawrpack started by the late Mr T. H. R. Hughes in 1876,and now under the mastership of Mrs Hughes, withDavid Jones as huntsman, is possibly the purestsource of Welsh blood to be found. The 20 coupleof hounds hunting in Carmarthen and Cardiganare rough-coated black and tans, WTelsh and firstcross with English hounds, every endeavour ismade to maintain the distinctive character of theold breed. The Neuadd Fawr hounds are notedfor their beautiful music, and their work on a coldline. It has been said of the Welsh hounds thatthey have the same peculiarity as the bloodhound,for they will not stand the whip or much interferencein chase, being self-hunters, not handy at a cast.The only pure Welsh hounds we have seen were inan English kennel, hated by the huntsman for theirindependent quarrelsome ways. Most of the Welshkennels now have a working pack suited to theneeds of the country, bred with some regard as tofeet and legs, and more level than was the case ageneration ago.
