e mostly coarse water laid mate-rials such as are likely to be water-bearingunder cover. 2. Over an area of 47 square miles they diptowards and beneath the Livermore Valley atan angle of about 20°. 3. They have a thickness of more than 4000feet. 4. It seems probable that deep wells proper-ly located with reference to the geology, andpenetrating these gravels where they pass be-neath the valley, may yield artesian water. 5. They are of fresh water or land origin 6. Even if these gravels do not yield ar-tesian water, they form a great natural reservoirbeneath the valley. 7. There is no great thickness of gravelsalong the northern margin of the valley. No Outlet by Way of San Ramon. The possibility has been suggested of an under-ground outlet for the waters of the LivermoreValley northward by way of the San RamonValley. I know of no good grounds for this idea.The Niles Canyon through which the drainageof the Livermore Valley escapes has been cutdown by the stream flowing through it. The
