he ceremonies of Old TwelfthDay as it was celebrated in France, no one at the feast being allowed to drinkuntil the chosen King of the Bean had first set the example, but the momenthis glass had touched his lips a unanimous shout arose, Le Roi boit!—thissignal of The King drinks being followed in most cases by universal riot anduproar, which is vigorously portrayed in the painting. As we mount the ample staircase several of the old Barons of Grange andtheir stately Dames look down upon us from their respective frames on thewall, among which we find the portraits of the five daughters of the Setonfamily who entertained Prince Charles Stuart at the Grange House. That ofDame Isabel Seton is particularly interesting. She is painted in a blue silkdress embroidered with silver,- the silk of which it is spun having been woundoff the cocoons by her own hands from the silkworms she had reared and fed Frontispiece. - This dress, wliicli we have seen, is sull carefully preserved in Iho family.

O 4 I 5 AS A BARONIAL RESIDENCE 329 in a little house in the garden, now called the apple-house. The hall wherethese pictures hang is lighted from the east by a lofty double window, throughwhich the early morning sun streams with rosy-coloured rays, ofttimes tintingtheir bygone faces anew with the glowing look of youth and beauty. Among the family portraits at the Grange there are many historicallyinteresting, representing persons of note and dignity, men who held high publicoffices in their day,—such names as Sir William Dick of Braid, Sir JohnLeslie of Newton, and General Leslie, Lord Newark, Sir Andrew Ramsay ofAbbotshall, Sir John Lauder, Lord Fountainhall, Sir Alexander Seton ofPitmedden, and Sir John Cockburn of Ormiston, besides many others whichwe shall enumerate in the Appendix.^ The present dining-hall was originally two rooms, the drawing-room anddining-room of the old manor-house. Having retained more of its antiquecharacter, it is not so lofty as the modern drawing-room
