is designed to remain in permanence as anornament of Fairmount Park, This building is designed in the Moresquestyle of architecture of the twelfth century, the chief materials externallybeing iron and glass, supported by fine marble and brickwork. The build-ing is 383 feet long, 193 feet wide, and 72 feet high to the top of the lan-tern. The main floor is occupied by the central conservatoiy, 230 feet by80 feet, and 55 feet high, surmounted by a lantern 170 feet long. 20 feetwide, and 14 feet high. Running entirely around this conservatory, at aheight of 20 feet from the floor, is a gallery 5 feet wide. On the north andsouth sides of this principal room are four forcing-houses for the propaga-tion of young plants, each of them 100 feet by 30 feet, and covered bycurved roofs of iron and glass, which, appearing upon the exterior of thebuilding, present a very fine feature.
