oolproduced being above the average. The mild winters, a goodsupply of water, and the railroad facilities make the countyespecially favorable to the stock industry. Agriculture is also carried on upon a small scale, water forirrigation being supplied chiefly from shallow wehs. Thewater can be raised by wind mills or with gasohne engines.On the Pajarito and around Tucumcari there are goodfarms. A beginning has been made in raising fruit, thechmate being especially adapted to horticulture, apiarj^,chicken farming, and other branches of husbandry. Excellentbuilding stone is found as well as clay for the making of brick.The chmate, like that of the rest of the Territory, is a specificfor lung and throat trouble. The winters are mild and thesummers are cool, especially the summer nights. The altitudevaries between 4,000 and 6,000 feet. The greater part of theland is subject to entry under the federal land laws, althougharound Tucumcari the land has been pretty well taken up byhomesteaders.

THE LAND OF SUNSHINE. 219 Tucumcari is the principal and only town. There are small settlementsat Dodson, Endee, Montoya, Puerco and Revuelto, wherepost offices and stores are maintained. Tucumcari is a pros-perous town situated at the foot of the Tucumcari mountain,at the junction of the Chicago, Rock Island and PacificRailway, the Dawson Railway and the Choctaw-Amarilloextension to be completed in the near future. The surround-ing country is a rolling prairie, broken and intercepted bysmaU streams and the Canadian river, which flows throughthe eastern portion. Tucumcari has a population of 1,000,The town is but little over two years old and is making satis-factory growth. Several large new buildings have just beencompleted. Work is in progress upon a $15,000 court houseand jail upon which construction work has commenced and a$10,000 school building was recently completed.
