I thought I took my fathers horse and followed thewagon, and finally I found it, and they were surprised to seeme. I talked with the girl and persuaded her to elope withme; and that night I put her on my horse, and we started offacross the prairie. After several hours we came to a camp;and when we rode up we found it was the one we had left afew hours before, and we went in. I stayed until I had persuaded her father to give herto me. I always meant to write that story out and publish it,and I began once; but I concluded that it was not much of astory. But I think that was the beginning of love with me. His life had its tragedies as well as its touch of romance—tragedies so real and profound that they gave dignity to allthe crudeness and poverty which surrounded him, and quick-ened and intensified the melancholy temperament which heinherited from his mother.
