ck withstone trimmings. There are three large hotels, and numeroussmall ones. Spokane Falls is a junction point with the mainline for trains on three branches of the Northern Pacific, the Spokane & Palouse, the Spokane Falls & Idaho, and theSpokane Falls & Northern. It is by far the most importantrailroad centre in eastern Washington, and also the mostimportant and populous commercial centre. The city is sus-tained by the trade of a large agricultural region, called thePalouse Country, lying south of it; an equally extensive agricult-ural district, called the Big Bend Country, lying west of it, andby the business of the Cc^ur dAlene, Chloride, Colville, andOkanogan mining districts, which are all tributary to it. It hasfour national banks, and one private bank. The surroundingsof the city are exceedingly picturesque, and there are manybeautiful drives along the banks of the Spokane river andHangmans creek, and across the beautiful flowery prairiesnorth and east of the city.

Idaho Division. 315 The falls, seen when niekin^;- snows swell the flow and thebanks are brimming with the hurrying flood, are a sight neverto be forgotten. Basaltic islands divide the broad river, andthe waters rush in swift rapids to meet these obstructions. Apublic bridge crosses from island to island. The widtli of theriver is nearly half a mile. JMiere are three great streamscurving toward each other, and pouring their floods into acommon basin. Reunited, the waters foam and toss for a fewhundred yards in wliiriing rapids, and then make anotherplunge into the canon beyond. Standing on the rocky ledgebelovV the second water-fall, and looking up the stream, a fineview is obtained of the wonderful display of force. All thingsare weak and trivial compared with the tremendous torrentthat heaves and plunges below, and the grand cascades thatfoam and toss above. • Eternal mist rises from the boilingabyss, and sunshine reveals a bow of promise spanning thechasm.
