Cat-tle are shipped to the markets of the cities on Puget Sound andin British Columbia. Ellensburg (1,809 miles from St. Paul; population, 3,000)is the county seat of Kittitas county and the headquarters ofthe Cascade Division of the Northern Pacific Railroad. It hasa court-house, two large hotels, several small hotels, anacademy, Masonic temple. Odd Fellows hall, two flouringmills, an opera house, two banks, a planing mill, an iron foun-dry, three newspapers, and is well-supplied with mercantileconcerns and mechanics shops. A raihoad is projected (1889) to run to theColumbia river at Port Eaton. Clealum (1,834 miles from St. Paul) is the junction of theshort branch road which runs to the Roslyn coal mines.Extensive beds of iron ore have been found in the vicinity of(lealum, and preparations are now (1889) being made for theestablishment of an important iron and steel manufacturingplant at this place under the management of an English com-pany. The population of Clealum is about 300. Roslyn (1,838 miles from St. Paul and 4 from Clealum) isthe terminus of the Roslyn Branch, and has a population ofabout 1,600. It is the most important coal-mining point on theentire line of the Northern Pacific.
