After leaving this spacious, hand-some depot, the road passes through the extensive yards ofthe company, and by its large freight house across the Missis-sippi on a substantial iron bridge of five spans resting uponmasonry piers. The first station is North Minneapolis^ in thesuburbs of the city. After leaving Minneapolis, the course of the railroad, follow-ing the east bank of the Mississippi river, is somewhat west ofnorth, the route being through a level or gently undulatingregion. The surface of the country is, however, diversified bylakes, rivers and small tracts of prairie and growths of hard-wood timber. The first important town is Anoka.—This town, the county seat of the county of thesame name, is situated twenty miles from Minneapolis, at themouth of Rum river, one of the most important loggingstreams in the Northwest. Anoka has 6,000 inhabitants, andis a flourishing manufacturing town, being principally engaged

Itasca (z^ miles from St. Paul; population, 300) has a goodwater-power, a hotel and a number of stores. Elk River (41 miles from St. Paul; population, 1,500) is thecounty seat of Sherburne county, and is located on the Missis-sippi at the mouth of the Elk river, a logging stream heading inthe great pineries. The town has a water-power, three hotels,two public halls and newspapers, churches and fifteen stores.Frlneetoity a village of 1,200 inhabitants, which is the head-quarters of the lumbermen of the upper Rum river, is 19 milesto the northward, and is reached by stage.
