Dining Cars.—Dining cars, built expressly to meet theneeds of the long journey, are attached to all through trains ofthe Northern Pacific Railroad. In these cars sumptuous mealsare served at the uniform rate of seventy-five cents. This addsgreatly to the luxury of traveling, entirely obviating the dis-comfort which is too often experienced where dependence forfood is placed upon wayside dining stations. Transfer Coaches.—In all the Western cities there arelines of transfer coaches ready on the arrival of the train totake the traveler and his baggage direct to any hotel, or transferhim across the city to any depot. The transfer agent passesthrough the cars before the arrival of the train, selling transferchecks and tickets. The service is trustworthy and convenient,and the charge is uniformly fifty cents.

24 The Northern Facific Railroad. MINNESOTA. Minnesota is situated in a high northern latitude, elevatedfrom I,GOO to i,8oo feet above the ocean, and has a pecuHarlydry and saUibrious climate. The most rugged portions of theState are about Lake Superior, along the Mississippi river,and on the heights of land which divide the sources of thegreat river systems. The area of Minnesota embraces 83,530square miles, or 53,459,840 acres, about two-thirds of which isundulating and well adapted to cultivation. Within the limitsof the State three great river and lake systems have theirsources : viz., the Mississippi and its northern tributaries ; theSt. Louis river and its numerous branches, forming the headof those waters which find their way through the great lakesinto the St. Lawrence ; and lastly, the affluents of the RedRiver of the North, Rainy Lake and Lake of the Woods,which discharge their waters into Hudsons Bay.
