Waldeyer went a step farther in explaining the differencebetween the origin of benign and malignant epithelial tumors when hedefined a carcinoma as an atypical epithelial tumor. With this defini-tion he wished to draw a line between a benign and a malignant epithelialtumor. By an atypical proliferation of epithelial cells is meant a conditionin which the new cells produced originally within the limits of epithe-lial tissue extend beyond the limits of the physiological type—that is,beyond the basement membrane. An adenoma (Fig. 118) as comparedwith a carcinoma (Fig. 119) is a typical tumor because the epithelialcells remain within their normal i)hysiological boundary-line, the mem-brana propria. The proliferation here isatypical because the epithelial cells are produced in a tissue of a differ-ent type and in a place distant from that in which they normallyoriginate. To make the point between typical and atypical proliferation ofepithelial cells still stronger the atypical proliferation will be definedas the presence, growth, and imiltiplication of epithelial cells i?t the meso-blastic tissues.
