Thus, at last, ended the Wyoming con-troversy ; the New England settlers and their descendants became in-dustrious and valuable citizens of their adopted state, and having nowbecome blended with the general family of the commonwealth, theyenjoy, in their blooming, beautiful and busy valley, the blessings ofpeace, plenty and prosperity. They are not, however, forgetful ofthe perils and sufferings by which their fathers established themselvesin that favored spot, and have erected a monument on the battleground of the Massacre of Wyoming, over the bones of the unfor-tunate sufferers in that melancholy tragedy, to commemorate thedeeds of that eventful day, and to show to future generations the spotwhere their forefathers fought, bled, and died in defence of theirfamilies and homes.
