Summary[edit]
DescriptionThe site of the Roman Fort viewed from Victoria Road - geograph.org.uk - 744103.jpg |
English: The site of the Roman Fort viewed from Victoria Road This 3rd century fort, the site of which has been occupied by a succession of Christian churches since the 5thC, was built to withstand attacks by Irish raiders. Unlike most Roman forts, which are rectangular, this was a triangular shaped structure. The Roman Navy used the fort as its base from which to patrol the Irish Sea. There was a signal station on Holyhead Mountain SH21880 from which reports of Irish vessels could be sent to the fort and also along the North Wales coast to Legionary HQ at Deva (Chester). |
