The rocks of the Longmynd on the Welshborder were formerly regarded as equivalentto the more western Harlech Beds; but they have been relegated since 1885 to the pre-Cambrian systems, through the discovery ofthe Olenellus fauna in higher beds in Shrop-shire. The Harlech Series may also be provedsome day to be pre-Cambrian, since these ancientslates and sandstones have as yet yielded nodefinite fauna. They rise in huge fort-likemasses above the Barmouth estuary and theHarlech coast, and the famous Bwlch DrwsArdudwy, a semicircular notch, afibrds a pass-age through them from the east.
