Sana, capital of the Turkish vilayet of Yemen, and one of the largest cities in.Arabia, stands at an altitude of no less than 7,100 feet above sea level, an altitudehigher than that of any European town. Well laid out, with broad clean streets,public and private gardens open to the public, Sana contrasts favourably with thewealthiest cities in the East. Some of its edifices are also bmlt in a fine style ofarchitecture, combining the rich sculpture of the Hajputana monuments with thenoble outlines of those of Florence. Some of its fifty mosques are of great size, andone of them rivals the Kaaba itself in sanctity even in the eyes of the orthodoxMussulmans of Yemen. This place was, so to say, re-discovered in 1843 by Arnaud, and it hasrecently been again visited by Hal^vy. It lies in the Jof depression, on a wadydraining towards Hadramaut, but of its monuments little now remaias except acircular enclosure and a ruined building locally known as the Palace of Balkis,according to the legend residence of the Queen of Saba, Solomons friend and ally.Numerous inscription found here and in the neighbouriag ruins of Medinei-en-Nehas, or City of Bronze, have enabled archaeologists partly to recover the historyand mythology of the Sabaeans. West of Mareb are seen the remains of thestupendous dyke, which notwithstanding its enormous thickness (175 paces at the Kg. 210.—Sana.Scale 1: 460,000.
