l torture she had endured,had exhausted Madame Victoires failing strength. AtCorfu her condition had been so serious that she hadreceived the last sacraments, and a few days after herarrival in Trieste it became evident that there was nolonger room for hope. After a long and painful agony,she died peacefully on 7th June, at the age of seventy-six years. Two emigres and two French merchantsliving in Trieste, bore her coffin to the Cathedral whereshe was buried. From this moment, Madame Adelaide began to sink.Although, by accepting his proposal, she would havebeen less exposed to falling into the hands of the French,she refused the shelter which the Emperor offered herat Laibach, at Fiume in Illyria, and at Agram in Croatia.From her early childhood, she had lived in closest unionwith Madame Victoire, and the death of the Princessbroke all the ties that bound her sister to life. She wasbroken by the effort she had made ever since theirdeparture from Caserte to sustain her sisters failing

He alone, with his lively wit, might have beenable to make the Princess take some interest in life.She wrote to her sons ; they hastened from Germanywhere they were both residing separately, they arrivedin time to see Madame Adelaide on her deathbed, and toassist at her last moments. Several times, she askedfor her lady-in-waiting, but the hopeless condition ofthe aged Princess had prostrated the Duchess de Narbonne.Her daughter-in-law had to undertake for her the painfulduty of closing Madame Adelaides eyes, as she had donebefore when Madame
