ions there is a belief that certaingroups of persons within the tribe are descended from certainanimals. There is, then, the tribe of the wolf, the bear, or theturtle, for instance. The animal from which one thinks him-self descended is sacred in his eyes, and he treats it with theutmost respect. He will not kill or eat it unless compelled bygrievous necessity, and not then without expressing sinceresorrow at having to take the life of one of his friends. Thetotem is expected to return this allegiance, and even if it is adangerous animal, it is believed to be harmless to its devotedfriends, and even to aid them by every means in its power. Not only are there clan totems, but individuals have theirown special totem, to which they must be faithful. In Alaska, the totem is carved upon a great post, which isoften brilliantly painted. This post is then set up in frontof the house or in the burial-place. Sometimes a post is agenealogical record, exhibiting the totems of several genera-tions.

THE ROMANCE OF THE REINDEER given a new impetus to the reindeer industry. Theminer must be fed, and he must be carried long dis-tances prospecting. A dog team required to go a longdistance can carry only its own supplies. With a rein-deer team the miner can haul his own outfit and sup-plies, and the reindeer feeds himself. The mining in-terest alone, which in the beginning was not a factor tobe considered, has opened an immense field to the rein-deer industry, and helped to insure a livelihood for theAlaskan natives, who bade fair so short a time ago to bea national charge. The increase of the deer, and theease with which the fawns are cared for — the herdsdoubling every three years — warrant the conservativeestimate that in three decades there will be ten millionreindeer in Alaska. There are also those who believethat within that time reindeer hams and tongues will beshipped to the United States, helping to feed our popu-lation.
