eautiful valley, and a changing panorama ofthe Sierra, the road making loops and turns inthe shadow of live oaks on the brink of pro-found crater-like depressions. Santa Cruz is a popular resort by the sea, possessing picturesque rocks and a fine back-ground of the mountains that bear its name.Near at hand is a much-visited grove of BigTrees, the approach to which leads through oakand fir, past cailons fringed with madrona andmanzanita, and fern and flower. Monterey was the old capital of California inthe earliest period of Spanish rule. Here theforest crowds upon the sea and mingles its odorof balm with that of the brine. The beachthat divides them is broken by cliffs where thecypress finds footing to flaunt its ruggedboughs above the spray of the waves, and in thegentle air of a perfect climate the wild flowershold almost perpetual carnival. Upon such afoundation the Hotel del Monte, with its vastparks of lawn and garden and driveway, cov-erifig many hundred acres, is set, all its130

magnificence lending really less than it owes tothe infinite charm of Monterey. Its fame hasspread through every civilized land, and Eu-ropean as well as American visitors make up itsthrong. Here, as elsewhere upon the coast, foreign travelers are seen most in that seasonwhen the extraordinary equability of winterallures them by contrast with their native en-vironment, but the Californian knows its sum-mer aspect to be no less winsome ; and so, fromthe years beginning to its end, there is onelong gala day at Monterey, its parks andbeaches and forests animated by wealthy andfashionable pleasure-seekers. The Del Monteis located in a scattering grove of 200 acres, alittle east from the town, and for lavishness ofluxury and splendor in construction and ac-cessory has perhaps no superior. Bathing, boating, camping and driving are the currentout-of-door activities, and specific points of in-terest are the Carmel Mission, Pacific Grove,Moss Beach, Seal Rocks, Cypress Point andPoint Pinos Light
