Here we had our first glimpse of CascadeMountain, whose noble and majestic dome piercesthe clear blue ether at an elevation of 9,796feet. Its snowy summit reflects the rays of thesun with startling brilliance, and the long seamsmade by its constantly flowing cascades are nearlyfilled with snow and ice which cast forth dazzlingrainbow lights almost to the base of the mountain. As we pushed farther into the valley, we were sur-rounded by still greater grandeur: I can comparethis magnificent scene only to the rocket windingits serpentine pathway through heavenly space untilat last it bursts, and all the upper world is aglowwith sparkling gems.
